Schooltalking brings together tools, research, and projects from educator and author Mica Pollock to help educators, students, and families create schools where every young person is supported and valued. Built on the idea that improving schools requires communicating, Schooltalking offers practical ways to expand opportunities for all students by discussing student needs, experiences related to race and diversity, and ways to improve schools. .
Pollock is an anthropologist and professor of education studies at the University of California, San Diego, and a former high school teacher. Her work explores how everyday communication shapes students’ experiences and opportunities, and how school communities can work together to better support every learner.
Schooltalking connects several areas of her work:
- Schooltalk: Her book and accompanying tools help educators rethink what they say about—and to—students every day, with a focus on improving communication for student support.
- Everyday Antiracism: Edited by Pollock, this collection brings together concrete strategies from leading scholars to help educators discuss and address issues of race, racism, and opportunity in everyday school life.
- #USvsHate: An educator- and student-led initiative that pairs lessons and dialogue about inclusion with opportunities for students to create public anti-hate messages affirming that all people are equally valuable.
- Research and conversation tools: Studies of recent restrictions on teaching and learning, resources such as #LetUsLearn talking points, and the Schooltalking Action Planner help school communities discuss challenges and identify steps toward change.
Together, these resources support reflection, professional learning, student voice, and action toward schools that work for everyone.
